The Albis mountain chain, for example, which is depicted in one of the \u201cAdler\u201c pictures, is an ideal destination for an outing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Albis mountain chain and the \u00dcetliberg<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%206\/0110-Albisberge-Zimmer407-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%206\/Thumbnails\/0110-Albisberge-Zimmer407-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0110-Albisberge-Zimmer407-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a>The Albis mountain chain stretches from the historic centre of Albisrieden, a municipality originally located outside the city limits, all the way to the town of Baar in the adjoining canton of Zug. Over much of its length, the mountain chain runs \u00adparallel to the Sihl river and the \u00adwooded Sihl valley. The Albis mountains and the Sihl valley are perfect places for short or more extensive walking tours. Especially during the summer months, the inviting woods of the Albis and the adjacent Sihl \u00advalley \u00adoffer the welcome possibility of long hikes in the cool shade of trees. The Sihl valley also invites \u00advisitors to discover a marvellous river landscape that is still very much in its natural state. In some parts, the \u00adprominent Albis forms only a very narrow, mostly wooded ridge, while in other parts, there are wide pla\u00adteaus with pleasant hiking paths and country inns. The lakeside face of the \u00adAlbis is very steep in places. By the town of Leimbach, for example, there are some near vertical rock \u00adfaces, called \u201cFall\u00e4tsche\u201c by the local population.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00dcetliberg is the highest part of the Albis mountain chain, which, incidentally, consists entirely of conglomerate, a sedimentary rock. Al\u00adready in the 19th century a hotel and observation tower were built on the Uto-Kulm, the peak of the \u00dcetliberg, which the townspeople affection\u00adately call their \u201cHausberg\u201c (the House Mountain). Archaeological finds on the mountain have revealed the exis\u00adtence of former defensive structures. The \u00dcetliberg offers visitors a superb panoramic view of Zurich, the Limmat and its valley, the Sihl, the lake, the plains of the canton of \u00adAargau, the Jura mountains, the \u00advalley of the Reuss and the Alps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lakeside area<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If time is too short for an excursion to Zurich\u2019s surrounding area, a walk along the lakefront provides some compensation. The lakeshore area was opened to the public in 1887. The large new roads along the lake\u00adshores transformed the former river town into a lake town and also \u00adrepresented Zurich\u2019s main tourist \u00adattraction at that time.<\/p>\n<p>In 1863, the canton government decided that the lake\u2019s shoreline should be advanced and accordingly fixed new limits. This decision constituted the legal basis for reclaiming land along the lakeshore. Since the boom in railway construction coin\u00adcided with this project, the railway \u00adengineers saw a unique opportunity to build the lines planned for the right and left shores, where necessary, on the reclaimed land. The plan was for the railway on the right side of the lake to go to Enge station via a bridge located in the area of Bellevue, roughly where the Quaibr\u00fccke stands today, and then to continue from Enge station to the Hauptbahnhof (the Main Station). The towns\u00adpeople quickly recognised that this would jeopardize the development of the town, especially around the \u00adlakeshore, and they vehemently \u00adopposed the project, which they named \u201ceiserner Ring\u201c (iron ring). Under the direction of city engineer Arnold B\u00fcrkli-Ziegler (1833\u20131894), a new plan was prepared which proposed a different route for the railway, involving the building of a \u00adtunnel. B\u00fcrkli also developed a project which featured the construction of roads along the lakeshore, a large square by the lake (B\u00fcrkliplatz with B\u00fcrkliterasse) and a bridge across the Limmat (Quaibr\u00fccke). Neither of these new projects was given much attention by the authorities, and \u00adtherefore a protest meeting was \u00adorganised, at which between 1500 and 2000 people participated. The \u00adcitizens\u2019 protest proved successful since, only a few weeks later, contracts in accordance with B\u00fcrkli\u2019s plans were signed with the private railway company. In 1878, the final project for the construction of the new lakeside area was ready, and it was put to a vote in 1881. Within the city, the project was accepted by a massive majority, and the two munic\u00adipalities Riesbach and Enge, which were also involved in the project, even accepted it unanimously. The technical direction of the building process was entrusted to B\u00fcrkli, and construction began a year after the vote.<\/p>\n<p>During a six-year construction \u00adperiod, 200 000 m2 of land was \u00adreclaimed from the lake, and more than 1 200 000 m3 of stone and mud were deposited in the lake to create the new shoreline. The area around the lakeshore changed from one day to the next. Idyllic natural areas as well as unattractive workshops and storage spaces all disappeared, and numerous houses that had stood \u00addirectly on the shore rapidly found themselves in new surroundings at quite a distance from the lake. \u00adReclaiming the land was achieved in several stages. First, pool-like enclosures were built of stones. The water was then pumped from these pools, and they were finally filled with marl, a lake sediment composed of mud, clay and limestone, which was brought to the landfill by boat. The landfill was then left to dry out naturally, a process taking many months. As the land was reclaimed, other construction work went ahead. Two quays were built, and in the Enge \u00addistrict a magnificent arboretum was laid out. On July 2 and 3, 1887, the opening of the new lakeshore was celebrated with a public festival. One of this festival\u2019s most memorable events was a procession of 6000 schoolchildren from the surrounding municipalities, who were dressed in traditional costumes. At the end of the 19th century, yet more land was \u00adreclaimed from the lake. The lakeside area was enlarged in Riesbach, as far as the Z\u00fcrichhorn, and on the other side of the lake, in Enge, as far as the Belvoir estate. In the 20th century, the lakeshore again saw construction work, especially some changes to the original layout. In honour of B\u00fcrkli, who had not just designed the whole project but had fought for it and had finally carried it out, a memorial was erected in his favourite place, the \u00adarboretum.<\/p>\n<p>Along the newly opened lakeshore, many large, attractive residential \u00adbuildings and villas were construct\u00aded. Although most of these villas had to make room for more profitable office buildings after the Second World War, the majority of the bourgeois \u201cfin de si\u00e8cle\u201c residential buildings survived, for example the \u201cRote Schloss\u201c (red castle) at General \u00adGuisan-Quai no. 20\u201322, built be\u00adtween 1891\u20131893, the \u201cWeisse Schloss\u201c (white castle) at General Guisan-Quai no. 30\u201336, erected \u00adbetween 1890\u20131892, and the \u00ad\u201cUtoschloss\u201c at Utoquai no. 29\u201331, built in 1898. The land adjacent to the new lakeshore offered ideal sites for the construction of the \u00adTonhalle (the Concert Hall), located at Claridenstrasse no. 7, and a \u00adtheatre, which today serves as the \u201cOpernhaus\u201c (the Opera House).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Opernhaus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%206\/0120-Opernhaus-Zimmer211-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%206\/Thumbnails\/0120-Opernhaus-Zimmer211-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0120-Opernhaus-Zimmer211-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a>Due to the industrious and liberal \u00adspirit of the 1830s, Zurich not only saw the implementation of a reform\u00aded school system and the founding of the university, but also the creation of its first permanent theatre, staging plays and musical performances. The theatre was financed by shares, hence its name \u201cAktientheater\u201c (the investment theatre). The first Aktientheater was housed in the former monastery church of the Discalced Monks located on the Untere Z\u00e4une. Plans for a new building never materialized, and finally fate intervened. On New Year\u2019s Eve of 1890, the \u00adAktientheater caught fire in the midst of a performance and burnt down to the ground. Thanks to the theatre director\u2019s presence of mind, nobody was hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Wealthy friends of the theatre succeeded in raising sufficient funds for a new theatre in a very short time. The town council in turn made one of the most attractive sites near the newly created lakeshore available for the construction of the new theatre. The contemporary experts of theatre architecture Fellner and \u00adHelmer of Vienna were consulted \u00adabout the construction of the the\u00adatre. Owing to lack of time, it was \u00addecided to use the plans that these architects had previously drawn up for the theatre in Crakow, Poland. The plans, for which Fellner and \u00adHelmer had won first prize in a \u00adcompetition, had not been used \u00adbecause the people of Krakow had decided to favour a local architect \u00adinstead.<\/p>\n<p>The new Zurich theatre was built in only 16 months. Since the theatre was to be erected on reclaimed land, approximately 2000 oak piles were driven into the ground to create a base for the stone foundations. The theatre\u2019s interior was decorated by local artists as well as by numerous artists from Vienna. On September 30, 1891, the new theatre was inaugurated, and on the following day, a performance of Richard Wagner\u2019s \u201cLohengrin\u201c was given.<\/p>\n<p>The well-proportioned facade of the theatre, today\u2019s Opernhaus, with its striking portico, faces the Sechse\u00adl\u00e4utenplatz (Sechsel\u00e4uten square) and the town centre. Since the last century, the \u201cB\u00f6\u00f6gg\u201c (a snowman symbolizing winter) has been burnt each year on the Sechsel\u00e4utenplatz.
