Originally, the houses on the right bank of the \u00adLimmat stood at the edge of the \u00adwater. A narrow river-path, partly \u00adlying under arcades, provided access from the river to certain parts of\u00a0the Old Town. Between 1823 and 1825, the first section of the Limmatquai was constructed and extended from Rosengasse to the Rathausbr\u00fccke. The continuous link between Bellevue and Central, involving further landfill, was built in stages during the following decades. At the same time, numerous houses along the Limmatquai underwent restoration or even complete rebuilding. On the way towards the Rathausbr\u00fccke, two buildings merit special attention, since they recall the architecture of the 1860s: the house of the \u201cMuseumsgesellschaft\u201c (Museum Society) at Limmatquai no. 62, which replaced the slaughterhouse, and the aristocratic \u201cHaus zum Schneggen,\u201c at Limmatquai\u00a0no. 64\u201366.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0110-Limmatquai-Zimmer101-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0110-Limmatquai-Zimmer101-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0110-Limmatquai-Zimmer101-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Zurich was considered \u201ca river town\u201c until the 1880s, when the lakeside area was developed. The town centre used to be by the Rathausbr\u00fccke, also called Gem\u00fcsebr\u00fccke, which actually functioned both as a bridge and square. Until 1838, when the M\u00fcnsterbr\u00fccke was built, the Rathausbr\u00fccke was the only bridge that allowed passage to vehicles and so constituted the main traffic artery between the two parts of town on either side of the Limmat. On the bridge, a fruit and vegetable market was held until well into the 20th century, hence the name Gem\u00fcsebr\u00fccke (vegetable bridge). Several other markets existed in the area around the bridge: Between the\u00a0Rathaus and R\u00fcdenplatz, under the arcades, was the fish market and a little downstream, next to the police station (built in 1825; Limmatquai no. 61), stood the well-proportioned \u201cFleischhalle\u201c (meat hall). In 1962, the meat hall fell victim to the widening of Limmatquai, much to the \u00adregret of many enthusiasts of architecture.\u00a0<br \/><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0120-Rathaus-Zimmer406-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0120-Rathaus-Zimmer406-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0120-Rathaus-Zimmer406-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"110\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Rathaus (Town Hall), situated at Limmatquai no. 55, has stood in the centre of the Old Town since the Middle Ages. The present Rathaus was built between 1694 and 1698, mainly in the Baroque style, although the facade shows a late Renaissance influence. On the facade, above the ground floor windows, numerous busts of public figures from Antiquity and from Swiss history can be admired, as can carved stone decorations representing garlands of fruit. Zurich\u2019s city council and cantonal \u00adparliament hold regular sessions in the Rathaus, and citizens may follow the proceeding from the gallery. \u00adVisitors are also welcome to attend. The cantonal council meets on \u00adMondays and the municipal council on Wednesdays.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Historic guild houses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0130-Zum-Rueden-Zimmer216-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0130-Zum-Rueden-Zimmer216-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0130-Zum-Rueden-Zimmer216-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the Middle Ages on, the guilds established themselves in the immediate neighbourhood of the town hall, which explains the considerable number of guild houses in the area. Opposite the town hall, between the Rathausbr\u00fccke and M\u00fcnsterbr\u00fccke, stand the guild houses \u201czur Zimmerleuten\u201c (Limmatquai no. 40), \u201czum R\u00fcden\u201c (Limmatquai no. 42) and \u201czur Saffran\u201c (Limmatquai no. 54). The \u201cHaus zur Haue\u201c (Limmatquai 52) is the home of the guild \u201czum K\u00e4mbel.\u201c All these guildhouses, dating back to a time when the guilds played an important role in the \u00adrunning of the town, merit special \u00adattention for their individual characteristics. The \u201cHaus zum R\u00fcden\u201c (Limmatquai no. 42) is chosen for closer examination because this \u00adparticular guild house is depicted in one of the \u201cAdler\u201c paintings. The first floor windows of the \u201cHaus zum R\u00fcden,\u201c in a striking Late Gothic style, are well preserved and provide a hint of what is hidden behind: a large Late Gothic room, the only one of its kind in Zurich, featuring an arched ceiling with decorative longitudinal wooden beams. The second floor is half-timbered and overhangs the lower part of the building.<br \/>Many of the guild houses have become excellent restaurants featuring a refined cuisine and hence they are open to the public. The festive atmosphere of the guild houses is \u00adespecially enjoyable at wedding \u00adcelebrations or banquets held in the splendid, historic rooms as well as during the \u201cSechsel\u00e4uten,\u201c Zurich\u2019s spring festival.<\/p>\n<p>The guild houses, together with the other imposing buildings lining the right bank of the Limmat, provide an impressive view, to which the arcades add yet more charm. Before the construction of the Limmatquai, the arcades saw a bustle of activity, whereas today they function only as a pedestrian precinct. Above the row of houses standing between Rathaus and Helmhaus rise the two distinctive towers of the Grossm\u00fcnster. For some people, the area around the Limmatquai represents the essence of a town that is proud of its history, traditions and architectural monuments. For others, this particular place, depicted in countless pictures, simply evokes a sense of belonging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Helmhaus and Wasserkirche<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0140-Wasserkirche-Zimmer111-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0140-Wasserkirche-Zimmer111-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0140-Wasserkirche-Zimmer111-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Helmhaus and the Wasserkirche (Water Church), which adjoin each other, used to stand on a small island in the Limmat. According to legend, Zurich\u2019s patron saints, Felix and \u00adRegula, as well as their servant \u00adExuperantius, were beheaded by the Romans on the site of the Wasser\u00adkirche.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0150-Limmatufer-Zimmer316-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0150-Limmatufer-Zimmer316-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0150-Limmatufer-Zimmer316-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a>The Helmhaus adds to the special character of the area around the \u00adLimmat. In the Middle Ages, it was simply an open hall, covered with a massive roof. In the 16th century, this hall was replaced by a wooden building having a high roof containing several levels of lofts. In 1791, the town council decided to erect a stone building in place of the wooden one, and, three years later, the Helmhaus, in its Classical, rather sober yet elegant style, was finished. Until well into the 19th century, the cotton, flax and linen market was held every \u00adFriday in the hall of the Helmhaus. In 1940\/41, the Helmhaus underwent extensive renovations, giving it a sense of spaciousness ideal for art \u00adexhibitions.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0160-Schifflaende-Zimmer302-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0160-Schifflaende-Zimmer302-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0160-Schifflaende-Zimmer302-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"110\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The present Wasserkirche was constructed between 1479 and 1484 and is considered Zurich\u2019s purest example of the Late Gothic style. The \u00adelegant church is surrounded by buttresses and has a polygon shaped choir. From the 17th century up to the construction of the Zentralbibliothek (see page 14), the Wasserkirche housed Zurich\u2019s public library, which was established in 1629. To accommodate the library, Baroque galleries were built inside the nave of the church, and if they still existed, they would, without any doubt, constitute one of the city\u2019s special places of interest. Often unnoticed, despite its large size, a monument to Zurich\u2019s Reformer Huldrych Zwingli (1484\u2013 1531) stands next to the Wasser\u00adkirche.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0170-Schifflaendeplatz-Zimmer403-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0170-Schifflaendeplatz-Zimmer403-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0170-Schifflaendeplatz-Zimmer403-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a>A little further upriver is the Schiffl\u00e4ndeplatz, where a dock was located until the construction of the Limmatquai in the 1830s. The \u201cHaus zum Raben\u201c (Limmatquai no. 40), standing between the Schiffl\u00e4nde and the Hechtplatz, provides another example of the town\u2019s rich architectural heritage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The M\u00fcnsterbr\u00fccke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0180-Helmhaus_Zimmer201-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0180-Helmhaus-Zimmer201-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0180-Helmhaus-Zimmer201-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The M\u00fcnsterbr\u00fccke (Minster Bridge) was built between 1836 and 1838 in order to replace the wooden \u201cObere Br\u00fccke.\u201c The bridge is the work of the Austrian building engineer Alois Negrelli (1799\u20131858), also known as Ritter (knight) von Moldelbe, who was one of the European pioneers of railway building. Among other pro\u00adjects, he built the first Swiss railway (see page 9) and was later involved in drawing up plans for the Suez Canal, which was built largely according to his ideas. The M\u00fcnsterbr\u00fccke, with its four elegant arches and its cast-iron railings and candelabras, deserves to be admired since it is without doubt Zurich\u2019s most beautiful bridge. In 1839, just after the bridge was built, Negrelli undertook the construction of the Grossm\u00fcnster terrace and its Gothic parapet, as well as the small shops situated \u00adbelow the terrace.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0190-Grossmuenster-Zimmer307-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0190-Grossmuenster-Zimmer307-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0190-Grossmuenster-Zimmer307-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"110\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>At the western end of the bridge stands an equestrian statue of Zurich\u2019s mayor Hans Waldmann (1434\u20131489), which was created by the sculptor Hermann Haller (1880\u20131950). Waldmann\u2019s life has continued to fascinate the local \u00adpopulation. The man, who later \u00adbecame a \u201cZunftmeister\u201c (guild \u00admaster) and a military commander, arrived in Zurich as an orphan and worked first as a tailor, then as a \u00adtanner and eventually as an ironmonger. In 1473 he became the \u00admaster of the \u201cK\u00e4mbel\u201c guild. His military career reached its peak in the war against Burgundy. As leader of Zurich\u2019s troops at the battle of Murten (1476), Waldmann contribu\u00adt\u00aded a great deal to the victory of the Swiss Confederates and was sub\u00adsequently knighted. In the following year, he led the Swiss Confederates at the battle of Nancy. From the time of the battle of Murten onwards, Waldmann received yearly pensions from various princes, which made him one of the richest men in the land. His proclaimed goal was to make Zurich the most beautiful city in the Confederation, and he used some of his own money to build the Wasserkirche and to renovate the Grossm\u00fcnster and Fraum\u00fcnster. However, Waldmann\u2019s dictatorial politics and the ruthless measures he took to carry through his ideas led first to a rebellion of the rural population and later to a revolt of the townspeople. On April l, 1489, Waldmann was removed from office, and five days later, under the pretext that an Austrian army was on its way to liberate him, he was hurriedly \u00adexecuted in public. All these events, known in Swiss history as \u201cWaldmannhandel\u201c (the Waldmann deal) came to a tragic end with the exe\u00adcution.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0200-zum-Thor-Zimmer212-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0200-zum-Thor-Zimmer212-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0200-zum-Thor-Zimmer212-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"110\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The Storchengasse, with its select shops, is reached by crossing M\u00fcnsterhof (see page 51). The shop windows of the \u201cHaus zum Thor\u201c (Storchengasse no. 13) merit special attention. This Neo Romanesque shop front, beautifully renovated under the direction of Zurich\u2019s society for the preservation of historic monuments, dates from 1865. Around the middle of the 19th century, the open market stalls were gradually \u00adbeing replaced by shops, and large shop windows were installed on the ground floors of the mostly medieval houses lining the narrow street.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>The Weinplatz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jcepopup noicon jcemediabox-image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/0210-Wuehre-Zimmer205-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-adler.ch\/images\/Zuerich\/Stadtrundg%C3%A4nge\/Tour%203\/Thumbnails\/0210-Wuehre-Zimmer205-Hotel-Adler-Zurich.jpg\" alt=\"0210-Wuehre-Zimmer205-Hotel-Adler-Zurich\" width=\"110\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The W\u00fchre, a passageway along the Limmat, can be reached from the Storchengasse via several narrow lanes. The street caf\u00e9s on the W\u00fchre and Weinplatz offer a moment of \u00adrelaxation, away from traffic and at the same time provide an opportunity to yet again admire the view of the picturesque buildings lining the opposite river bank.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cHaus zum (roten) Schwert\u201c at Weinplatz no. 10 served as an inn from 1406 until 1918. After 1612, under the management of the Ott family, the house became the most famous inn of the town. The second part of the 19th century was the inn\u2019s most notable period, when not only crowned heads and top military personnel but also poets and musicians stayed there.
